Considered one of the best books made about the history of Rio de Janeiro, História das Ruas do Rio by Brasil Gerson reached its 4th and final edition in 1965. It’s been said that in the book you have the opportunity to get to know Old Rio through facts and the characters that populated the alleys, bystreets, plazas, “morros” and avenues of the city.
I’d love to get my hands on it but I haven’t had the chance to yet. In second-hand bookstores, it’s rare. On online stores like Estante Virtual it’s priced at around R$150, or more. Saraiva has it for less.
