Rio B.C.

Before Christ was crowdfunded into existence in the 1920s, what lay in his place at the top of Corcovado was the Mirante do Chapéu do Sol (literally ‘Sun Hat Lookout’ due to its circular design and the cover it provided from the sun). It came to be in 1885, under order from Dom Pedro II, and lasted until 1942, when it was demolished in order to remake a staircase giving access to the Christ statue. For a while, the two creations coexisted, although the lookout point above was slightly relocated in 1926 when construction began on the world-famous statue.
